Western Union, an international money transfer system, operates over 300,000 service locations in 200 countries of the world out of which Russia and the CIS countries host some 27,000.
Through Western Union money transfer system you can transfer cash money (rubles or U.S. dollars) quickly and securely by using the service location nearest to you.
Important to know:
In order to send or receive money in Russia you will be required to show your valid identification document.
The valid identification documents are:
a passport;
a Russian residence permit for foreigners and stateless persons having permanent residence in the Russian Federation;
a military ID or a military service record book;
a temporary identification document issued by an internal affairs agency to establish the identity of a Russian citizen while his (her) passport is being processed.
Payouts under international money transfer transactions
In general, the amounts due under such transactions are paid out in the currency of the destination country.
- In Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and other CIS countries the money transferred from other countries can be paid out in U.S. dollars as well as in rubles.
- Money transfers within Russia are made in rubles.
- All payouts for transfer operations are made in cash only.
- All dispatches and receipts of funds through Western Union’s outlets attached to Russian Post subdivisions are made in rubles only.
Restrictions and special comments
Sending money from Russia:
- The maximum principal amount that will be accepted from Russian residents sending money to other countries is USD 5,000 or local currency equivalent per person, per transaction, per day.
- Senders must present valid identification documents.
- Senders must present evidence of origin of hard currency (a customs declaration, a currency exchange certificate) where required by law.
- Extended service times (where a money transfer is processed within 48 hours) may apply to outbound transfers to CIS countries from the following regions: Tyumen, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug/Yugra (Beloyarskiy, Berezovo, Igrim, Izluchinsk, Kagalym, Langepas, Lyantor, Malinovskiy, Megion, Mezhdurechenskiy, Nizhnevartovsk, Novoagansk, Nyagan, Poykovskiy, Pokachi, Pyit-Yah, Raduzhnyiy, Sovetskiy, Surgut, Nevteyugansk, Uray, Fedorovskiy, Hanty-Mansiysk, Yugorsk), Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Gubkinskiy, Labytnangi, Muravlenko, Nadym, Novozapolyarniy, Noviy Urengoy, Noyabrsk, Pongody, Purpe, Salehard, Tarko-Sale, Harp, Urengoy). The maximum send amount here is USD 1,000 per person, per day.
Receiving money in Russia:
- All money transfers to be processed at service locations attached to Russian Post subdivisions are available in Russian rubles only.
- Russian Post locations do not pay out on any money transfers originating from Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
- Senders must present valid identification documents.
- All the service locations except those attached to Russian Post offer transfer services in U.S. dollars and in Russian rubles alike.

Money transfers are reserved for private consumer use only and may not be used for commercial or business purposes, for real estate purchases or for investments.
